Use MPViewer to find default disabled rules and monitors.

Boris Yanushpolsky has created some tools for Ops Mgr 2007. With the MPViewer (Download here.) you can open up MPs and look at the rules and monitors. If you sort on Disabled then you have the rules and monitors not enabled by Default. If you compare this information with the rules in your MOM 2005 Admin Console you can get help getting the same alerts in Ops Mgr 2007 as you are used to get with MOM 2005.

Some Service Monitoring is disabled by default in Ops Mgr 2007

In MOM 2005 by default Services where monitored by Windows Base Server operating System MP. In Ops Mgr 2007 these rules are disabled by default. The rules is "The service or driver failed to start." and "The service terminated unexpectedly.". These rules monitors the System Event log for alerts from "Service Control Manager" with some specific event numbers. So if a service stops and the "Service Control Manager" writes a event to the System event log then a alert is raised. In Ops Mgr 2007 these Rules are Disabled by default and you have to create a override to activate the service monitoring. If you have some service that you absolutely want to be sure of is running, you still need to create a MP for that service, but this way you get some help to detect some services that stops.

How to activate the rules:
1. Go to the Authoring Pane in the Ops Mgr 2007 Console.
2. Select Management Pack Objects
3. Select Rules
4. Scope the view to Windows Server 2003 Operating System(and Windows Server 2000 Operating System)
5. Type "A Service" in the "Look for:" Search box
6. "A Service or Driver Failed to Start" and "A Service Terminated Unexpectedly" rules will appear.
7. As you can see they are "grayed" and is disabled by default.
8. Right Click on the Rule and create an override for "All objects of type" if you want to enable for all Windows 2003 Servers or select a group if you want to pick some special Servers.
9. Check the box for Override for Parameter Name "Enabled" and change the Override setting to "True"
10. Save the setting in a custom Override MP.(Do NOT use the Default MP)
11. Follow this procedure for the rest of the rules you want to activate.

This way you have a "generic" service monitoring at hand.

SDK Service event ID 26330 is raised when database connectivity is lost

If you recive a SDK Service event ID "26330" when database connectivity has been lost, you get an unhealthy Management server in the Health Explorer. The problem is that the event that turns the monitor "green", the healthy SDK Service event ID "26331", does not show up when you get the database connection back. So the monitor is unhealthy even when your database connection is up again. This is a bug in Ops Mgr 2007 and it is to be fixed in the SP1. This is due to have a RC release in November, with the RTM release in February.

Solution:

In the mean time, the health service can be reset to work around the issue.

To reset the Health Status:

1. Launch Health Explorer for the RMS and document the monitor within the Root Management Server.
2. Disable Monitors which are Red using an Override which applies only to the RMS server.
3. Put the RMS server into Maintenance Mode.
4. Wait until the server is unmonitored.
5. Restart the Health Service.
6. Take the RMS server out of Maintenance Mode.
7. Re-enable the Monitors which were disabled.
8. Launch Health Explorer and refresh the state.
